A village of lights: elves, fairy tales and the warmth of fire
Roseto Valfortore lights up for the season. From early December to mid-January, the Daunian hill town hosts “The Magical World of Elves and Fairy Tales”: open-air scenography, family shows, time-honoured fire rituals and tastings spread across lanes, squares and churches. The mood builds from an autumn preview through Christmas, Epiphany and the community bonfires of Saint Anthony.
The curtain-raiser comes on 31 October with a costume Halloween Party at Bar Italia. On 22 November it’s St. Martin’s along Corso Roma: wine, local bites and live folk music for a convivial stroll. On 23 November, at dusk, the Christmas lights switch-on unveils the fairy-tale village, with a mascot parade and the first photos under the glowing installations.
December brings the heart of the programme. In the former Church of San Rocco, Christmas evenings alternate with a magic show (8 December). On 13 December Santa Claus arrives in the old town to meet the children. On 23 December the ancient Fagghje—a fire procession—returns to warm streets and memory; on 24 December, after evening Mass, a Gospel concert fills the Mother Church. Food lovers will enjoy “Calici e Braci”—an evening of grilled specialties and pairings celebrating mountain hospitality.
January closes with two symbols of the season: 6 January brings the Befana (Epiphany treats for children), and 17 January the Foche di Sant’Antone, the communal bonfires that bid farewell to the festivities and gather everyone once more around the flames.
