The basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as the cathedral of Barletta, was built during the twelfth century and is located in the historic center.

The cathedral of Barletta has undergone, over the years, numerous restoration works.

Since 1986 it has also been co-cathedral of the archdiocese of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie.
