The popular Naples of the early 20th century arrives in Vico del Gargano with “L’ultimo scugnizzo”, the renowned play by Raffaele Viviani, scheduled for Saturday, January 31 at 8:15 PM at the Auditorium Lanzetta, as part of the Festival of Popular Theatre.
The performance will be staged by 30 allora APS, a theatre company from Caserta and winner of the Festival of the Regions in Spoleto in 2024, an award that confirmed the production as one of the finest examples of Italian amateur theatre.
Written in 1932, L’ultimo scugnizzo tells the story of Antonio Esposito, a former street boy striving for social redemption and a better future. Through an intense and deeply human narrative, Viviani portrays the dreams, hardships and resilience of Naples’ working-class youth, turning early 20th-century Naples into a universal metaphor for struggle, hope and dignity.
The play is directed by Vincenzo Russo, who also designed the evocative stage sets together with Giuseppe Petriccione. Costumes by Annamaria Zarbo and Carla Ferrara faithfully recreate the popular Neapolitan style of the time, while musical consultancy is provided by Marco Mantovanelli.
Strong audience response
The Festival of Popular Theatre of the Gargano has been enjoying an outstanding public response, with the Auditorium Lanzetta reaching sold out capacity for almost all performances so far. Audiences have shown great enthusiasm and engagement, also during the special events focused this year on the theme of adolescence.
Over the past three years, the Festival has welcomed nearly 10,000 spectators, with a record 4,000 attendees last year alone. This year, the organizing association ’Ncvò Cappà ’Nsciaun aims to exceed those numbers once again, thanks to an even higher-quality programme and the participation of some of Italy’s best amateur theatre companies.
