Castle of Monte Sant'Angelo
Informations
The Castle of Monte Sant'Angelo was built between 837 and 838 by the bishop of Benevento, Orso I. It was later restored over the centuries by Normans, Swabians, Angevins and Aragonese.
The castle of Monte Sant'Angelo is located in the Gargano National Park. Did you know that the city is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List?
In origin, until the 9th century, there was only a Byzantine castrum on the site of the current castle. Later, the castle became the residence of princes from the lordship of the Honor Sancti Angeli, including Rainulf Drengot and Robert Guiscard. The latter rebuilt the Tower of the Giants in the 11th century, making it a crucial element in the defense of Gargano. The castle then passed into the hands of Emperor Frederick II, who gifted it to Princess Isabella of England, his third wife. The structure features architectural works in the Frederickian style, such as the Treasury Hall with a central pillar and ogival vaults.
During the Norman period, the Towers of the Giants and Quadra were built, while Frederick II added the Treasury Hall. The influence of the Aragonese can be seen in the current fortification, with the creation of the almond-shaped tower and the moat for protection against enemies.
The Angevins took care of the manor but also used it as a state prison, housing famous figures like Philippa of Antioch and Queen Joanna I of Naples, whose remains are believed to be in Monte Sant'Angelo, in the Church of San Francesco
