Founded in 1982 and located in the historic center of Mattinata, the Civic Museum was opened to the public only in 1990. Today the Civic Museum of Mattinata sets up temporary exhibitions.
In Mattinata the story is still alive: on Mount Saraceno a necropolis belonging to the Dauna population was found, near the sea there are the remains of patrician villas and in the historic center there are still traces of the first houses, such as the "pagliai", low buildings, with a rectangular base, made up of local, rough limestone stones, set one on top of the other.
