Manfredonia Cathedral
Informations
The cathedral of Manfredonia, dedicated to the patron saint of the city San Lorenzo Maiorano, was built between 1270 and 1274.
However in 1620 it was destroyed by the Turks, and was rebuilt in 1700 by Monsignor Bartolomeo della Cueva.
Today the cathedral of San Lorenzo Maiorano houses the relic of the patron saint, as well as the icon of the Madonna of Siponto.
The Cathedral, designed by a French engineer, has three aisles, a majestic dome, and a tribune. In 1327, the relics of Saint Lawrence were brought there, but in 1620, during a siege of the City, the cathedral was set on fire and destroyed by the Turks. It is said that the body of San Lorenzo Maiorano was destroyed, except for the right arm, which is now preserved under the main altar. Reconstruction began in 1624, but earthquakes in the eighteenth century caused new damage and works. Today, the Cathedral retains its seventeenth-century structure, with a facade that harks back to classical models, including statues of San Lorenzo Maiorano and Pope John XXIII at the top
