Abbey of San Leonardo di Siponto
Informations
The Abbey of San Leonardo in Lama Volara is located in Siponto (FG) and is dedicated to San Leonardo di Noblac. It is a perfect example of Apulian Romanesque architecture!
Dating back to the 12th century, the abbey consists of a Church, Monastery, and Hospital. Restoration works have been underway since 2014 to make it accessible to the public.
The exact date of its foundation is unknown, but it was officiated by the regular canons of St. Augustine in 1127, suggesting it might have been built in the early 12th century or late 11th century. During the 12th century, the abbey flourished and became affiliated with ten other churches in the area, with four more added during the first half of the 13th century. The period until the first half of the 13th century was its most prosperous, with Riccardo as its leader until 1167 and then under the priorate of Pietro (1184-1224). Afterward, the abbey experienced a rapid decline due to limited economic resources. In 1261, it was handed over to the Teutonic Order and remained under their management until the second half of the 15th century. During this time, the Knights added a wall and crenellated tower, now disappeared. Subsequently, it came under the management of the Procuratoria of the Order of Rome in 1466 and later was assigned in commendam to local diocesan cardinals.
