Abbey and Hermitages of Pulsano
Informations
The abbey of Santa Maria di Pulsano is located in Monte Sant'Angelo, on the Gargano.
Around the Pulsano abbey there are the Pulsano hermitages which, in 2010, were elected "Place of the FAI heart"
The Abbey of Pulsano was built in 591 on an ancient pagan oracle temple dedicated to Calchas and entrusted to the monks of the Order of Saint Equitius abbot. In the 12th century, thanks to the intervention of Saint John of Matera and his Pulsanense Congregation, the abbey was renovated from a state of abandonment, establishing the autonomous monastic order of the poor hermits of Pulsano.
In 1177, the construction of the abbey church dedicated to the Holy Mother of God was completed, with an altar that housed the remains of Saint John of Matera, consecrated by Pope Alexander III during his visit to Gargano. In the 14th century, the Pulsanense Order ceased to exist, and the remaining members joined the Benedictine Order, abandoning the rule of Saint John the Abbot.
In the 15th century, the Celestines took custody of the abbey, protecting it from the claims of local lords. However, the abbey was still under the administration of a cardinal commendatory from Rome. Among the Celestines, Ludovico Giordani, a monk from Gargano, is noteworthy for constructing two side altars in the abbey church of Pulsano, unfortunately destroyed, and the Celestine monastery in Manfredonia. Finally, in 1646, a violent earthquake struck Gargano and destroyed the abbey's archives and library.
