The Madonna del Soccorso is the main patron saint of San Severo, an important city in the north of Puglia, about thirty km from Foggia, the provincial capital.
Its solemnity is celebrated on the third Sunday of May and the following Monday of each year.
Over the years, the event has taken on an increasing importance, making it one of the most important religious festivals in the region.
The reason for this recognition is given by the fact that the external celebrations are characterized by two processions in which you carry on the shoulder, in addition to the simulacrum of the Virgin, also the effigies of Saints Severinus abbot and Severus bishop, co-patrons of the city, punctuated by "batteries" of fireworks, set on fire in over twenty districts, at the passage of the sacred parades.
Over time, the "batteries" have become more and more the predominant element of this festival that, over the decades, has been enriched by a further peculiarity: the "fujenti".
People of different sexes and ages who run "close to the fire", defying the sparks and the fiery card, and chased by the increasingly strong and fast deflagrations until the end of the "battery".
Thus the "fujenti" create a spectacular and adrenaline-pumping collective race, an almost Dionysian escape from death and pain, under the gaze of the patron saints and protectors, staging a hymn to the most authentic joy of life.
For the Sanseveresi - residents and not - the festival is an important annual event, a great and aggregating baroque liturgy in which they recognize and identify.
The peculiarity of this festival has seen over the years many important guests and not, attracted by this fascinating mixture of religious and pagan ritual.
