Not to be confused with Teanum Sidicinum, capital of the Sidicini, corresponding to the contemporary Teano, in the province of Caserta. The Apulian site falls administratively in the contemporary municipality of San Paolo di Civitate, in the province of Foggia.
Between the final Bronze Age and the early Iron Age, or between the end of the 11th and 9th centuries BC, Tiati, one of the most important settlements of ancient Daunia (current province of Foggia), was built on the southern slope of the course of the Fortore a few kilometers from its mouth in the Adriatic.
The archaeological site today falls within the municipality of San Paolo di Civitate. From Tiati the view swept over the valley and the Adriatic coast to the Tremiti islands and the accesses to the region were controlled from the north and west, as well as the eastern plain as far as the Gargano. The inhabited area spread out over the hills with nuclei of huts and areas used for agricultural and livestock activities.
Thanks to its border position, the Daunian settlement immediately became an important hub for transhumance routes and north-south and east-west trade flows, establishing cultural and political contacts with the Etruscans of Capua and, later, with the Samnites. The geographical location therefore determined the distinctive features of a "frontier" community, aspects that found their fulfillment in the transformation of the funerary and religious ritual and in the adoption of the Oscan language.
