From May 20 to July 18, 2025, Palazzo Dogana will host “Digital Cosmati@Galleria,” a unique exhibition blending art, science, and cutting-edge technology to rediscover the millennia-old Cosmatesque art. Organized by the Department of Humanities at the University of Foggia, this project renews the dialogue between past and future, highlighting the surprising modern relevance of the symbols, geometries, and ornamental motifs developed in the Middle Ages by the renowned Roman Cosmati family.
The exhibition features 60 digital works by artist Eleonora Bilotta, printed on canvas and large aluminium panels that accentuate their vibrant colors and textures. Alongside the physical display, a virtual dimension unfolds: an AI-driven avatar guides visitors through the secrets of Cosmatesque composition, while QR codes placed throughout the galleries unlock videos, in-depth content, and 3D reconstructions of the pavement of the Church of the Ottimati in Reggio Calabria—the only Cosmatesque mosaic in Calabria.
Completing the experience are five original works by Alfredo Bortoluzzi, on loan from the Alfredo Bortoluzzi Collection of the Fondazione dei Monti Uniti di Foggia, creating a direct bridge between historical craftsmanship and contemporary experimentation. The inauguration will take place on Tuesday, May 20 at 4:30 PM in the Hall of Frescoes at Palazzo Dogana, in the presence of the organizers and scientific curators.
