The Church of Santa Maria della Luce was built around 1158 on a hill overlooking the plain of Mattinata.
The church della Luce, consecrated to the Madonna Maria Santissima della Luce, was the target of numerous looting and destruction by the invaders over the years. After several restorations, today it has a tufaceous stone facade entirely decorated and completed by an architrave.
Inside, the temple has a cross with a semi-arched dome. The transept with the high altar in precious polychrome marbles was built in devotion of the people in honor of the Protectress, where the faithful reproduction of the authentic image, on canvas, of an unknown painter of the Neapolitan school of the 1600s.
The abbey church of Santa Maria della Luce has historic stained glass windows that show the most significant moments in the life of the Madonna, while the symbolism of the S.S. Trinità shines through the porthole of the wall in front of the main altar. The stone bas-reliefs present in the church della Luce have been moved from the monastery of S. Stefano della Sperlonga to Mattinata. Two larger ones have been added to the Bell, blessed by Cardinal Orsini in 1677 (Pope Benedict) in honor of Santa Maria della Luce: on one of them is carved the motto of St. Benedict "Ora et Labora" with the figure of the Saint , due to the dependence of the Church on the ancient abbey of S.S. Trinity of Monte Sacro; on the other the image of St. Anthony with the inscription “Verbum et Caritas”, for the devotion of the people to the Saint of Padua.
