San Marco in Lamis is celebrating the centenary of the birth of Tommaso Nardella, historian, bibliophile, and scholar who significantly contributed to the knowledge of the history of Capitanata. To honor his legacy, the local administration, in collaboration with the 'Leonardo Sciascia Documentation Center - 20th Century Archive' and the Nardella family, has organized a series of cultural events and initiatives throughout the year. The celebration will kick off on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 5:00 PM, with the opening of an exhibition dedicated to brigandage and the screening of the documentary ‘La Capitanata between reaction and brigandage’, which will offer a reflective look at the complex historical dynamics of the region. The documentary presentation will be followed by an introduction from Giampaolo Nardella, a family member, and the inauguration of a museum at the library that Tommaso Nardella considered his “workshop,” a place where each document, each archival paper, was transformed into a tool for research to understand the history of his hometown, with particular focus on the phenomenon of brigandage.
Nardella's library, which he saw as a true forge of knowledge, is now the heart of this commemoration, a place that preserves the memory of a man who made his passion for history and culture the driving force of his life. The exhibition and screenings will be just the first step of a program that will continue with the presentation of the book “L'angelo del Gargano” by Antonio Motta, scheduled for May 3 at 6:00 PM, offering another opportunity for reflection on the history of the region. To close the year of celebrations, on November 29, the 2026 calendar themed "The Days of Brigandage in San Marco in Lamis in the Pages of Tommaso Nardella" will be distributed, providing another chance to relive, through his work, the most significant historical moments related to our past. These initiatives not only celebrate Nardella but also invite the entire community to rediscover its history and roots, with the aim of preserving and enhancing a cultural heritage that is deeply embedded in the collective memory of Capitanata.
