Since the diocese of Ascoli insists on the same territory as the ancient diocese of Herdonia, current Ordona, of which the proto-bishop is San Leone, in 2012 the bishop emeritus Msgr. Felice Di Molfetta, wanted to dedicate the new parish church of Ordona to the Holy Virgin with this title.
In the new temple an image of the Madonna in terracotta was placed, depicting the Virgin and Child, the work of the Molfetta artist Giuseppe Samarelli.
The title of Santa Maria del Principio refers to the dedication of the ancient cathedral in Ascoli Satriano, which was destroyed by an earthquake and neglect in the 17th century. Since the Diocese of Ascoli encompasses the same territory as the ancient Diocese of Herdonia, now known as Ordona, whose first bishop was Saint Leone, in 2012, the retired bishop Monsignor Felice Di Molfetta decided to dedicate the new parish church of Ordona to the Virgin Mary with this title.
The papier-mâché artwork was created by the artist Marco Epicochi from Lecce and was offered by a family from Ordona. The statue is inspired by a 14th-century fresco by Lello da Orvieto, located in the Naples Cathedral, depicting the Virgin Mary enthroned, presenting the Son of God for adoration. This title, Maria, mother of Jesus, the Word of God, and the Beginning of all things, was chosen to honor its significance, as it was also represented in the ancient part of the Naples Cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Restituta.
