A few kilometers from the municipality of Foggia there is the Incoronata Wood, a protected natural area established in 2006.
The flora and fauna found within the Incoronata Woods are very varied and diversified.
The park extends beyond the Incoronata forest, including part of the proposed Community Importance Site "Valle del Cervaro - Bosco dell'Incoronata" in the municipality of Foggia. Inside, you can find the sanctuary of Madonna Incoronata, an international pilgrimage destination.
In recent years, the Incoronata forest has been the subject of in-depth technical and scientific studies to create an inventory of plant species, identify rare and floristically interesting species, and characterize the vegetation using the Zurigo-Montpellier sigmatist method. These studies have been published in the online journal "Interdipendenze della Società di Etnosociologia e Ricerca Sociale" (S.E.Ri.S).
The forest also holds significant importance for the rediscovery of licorice in the area. The fauna is diverse, with a rich birdlife composed of blackbirds, crows, woodcocks, magpies, and numerous species of birds of prey. There are also numerous reptiles and mammals, including wild boars, roe deer, fallow deer, and squirrels. Recently, the Apennine wolf has reappeared in the Gargano and Murge areas, with a smaller population in the Gargano but some stable packs with cubs.
