Mills of Roseto Valfortore
Informations
Water mills
The landscape of Roseto Valfortore is a true jewel, dotted with splendid and ancient water mills, silent witnesses of an industrious and hard-working past. These structures stood close to the various natural springs and numerous waterways that characterize the area, exploiting the abundance of these resources for their operation.
These mills were in operation until the 1950s, after which they were gradually abandoned. However, the "upstream mill", thanks to a significant recovery intervention promoted by the Municipality, has been transformed into a living monument to industrial archaeology, becoming home to the Museum of Ancient Art. This museum houses a vast collection that narrates local history through objects of everyday life and work tools of the past.
Upstream and downstream mill
The mill building upstream stands out for its architectural beauty, with a dovecote tower that emerges majestically. Next to this, a lower part of the building housed the beating heart of the milling activity: the millstones, which were set in motion by the water of the stream that flows right under the structure. This same watercourse, a little further downstream, also powered a second mill, known as the "valley mill", before flowing into the Fortore river.
After a careful restoration process, the two watermills have been restored to their former glory.
Furthermore, the ancient water collection tanks, once used for the needs of the mills, have been transformed into swimming pools, offering a relaxing and pleasant attraction during the hot summer months.
