The sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, located in Monte Sant'Angelo, is a very important place of interest registered, since 2011, on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo is a place revered since 490, when there was the first apparition on the Gargano of the archangel Michele.
A first sanctuary was built in 493 at the cave where the apparition took place, and from the 7th century onwards, the Gargano area where the sanctuary stood became part of the Lombard domains, being included in the territories of the Duchy of Benevento.
The conversion of the Lombards, which had already begun in 589 under Queen Theodelinda, was completed during the reign of Cunipert. The Michaelic cult developed within a context of ancient religiosity, where the veneration of those saints perceived as connected to the Norse deities of Germanic tradition had a great following. The Archangel Michael was attributed the same warrior virtues once worshiped in Odin, the Germanic god of war, the guide to the afterlife, and the protector of heroes and warriors.
The Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel thus became the primary center of worship for the archangel in the entire Western world, serving as a typological model for all the others.
