To remember the primitive constructions of a now extinct civilization, the “Pagliaio” was rebuilt near the town of Faeto. The construction has a conoidal shape and is made of stone. The Pagliai are ancient buildings that denote a spirit of sacrifice, adaptability to the environment, foresight and diligence.
The typical Pagliaio, which we find in our area, is made of stone with drywall, has a circular plan and consists of concentric circles projecting up to the top. It can take the shape of a cone similar to a trullo or that of a truncated cone, surmounted by a large stone slab, which in the past had both the function of closing the chain of concentric circles and that of guarding and protecting the union familiar.
The Pagliai were built close to a slope and three quarters of them were dug into the side of the mountain, which is why the typical trullo shape is visible only from the inside. From the outside it is possible to see only the front facade with the architraved entrance door. For the construction of the Pagliai, especially those made of stone, stones collected in the fields were used, in particular the smooth and the chianchètte, flat and square stones.
Each Pagliaio had a threshing floor in front of it and on the sides the custére or pannìzze, which were used to shelter the animals. Some Pagliai inside were plastered with clay or white clay for hygienic reasons but also to prevent animals such as insects, lizards or snakes from nesting among the stones.
