The Dolina Pozzatina, located near San Nicandro Garganico, is a natural basin that was formed due to the melting of the rocks.
It is the largest sinkhole in Europe and perhaps also in the world.
The Pozzatina sinkhole is one of the many sinkholes in the Gargano National Park. It is the most imposing and spectacular among them, with a depth of 132 meters, an upper perimeter of 1,836 meters, and a lower perimeter of 522 meters, measured by the Speleo Team Montenero in September 2020. These new measurements make it the largest sinkhole in Europe and perhaps the world. Inside, there is a very fertile cultivated land, and at the center, an adapted cavity acts as a resurgence well, as the bottom is impermeable due to the clayey soil.
