Church of Santa Maria Assunta
Informations
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is the most important place of worship in Pietramontecorvino.
The Church of Maria Santissima Assunta, better known as the Mother Church of Pietramontecorvino, is attested for the first time in 1328, but probably dates back to the twelfth century as evidenced by the side portal containing the Agnus Dei. The latter was the only entrance until 1700, when the presbytery was overturned. The portal on the east side, the loggia and the staircase also belong to that period.
Inside, the Church has a single nave, with a wooden trussed roof; the stupendous high altar and the windows on the right side are in Baroque style, while more generally the church is Romanesque. You can also admire the valuable monuments of the Tinto family, from the 16th century, and a chapel from the same period. The quadrangular medieval bell tower with a majolica dome is also very beautiful.
