The sanctuary of the Madonna Incoronata is located in the homonymous village in the province of Foggia.
It is a place of great spirituality, yet it has a modern style.
On the altar of the sanctuary is the statue of the Madonna nera.
The sanctuary is surrounded by the woods, where, according to tradition, the Madonna Incoronata appeared to two men, a count, and a shepherd, in the Cervaro forest, south of Foggia, in April 1001.
At the site of the apparition, the farmer filled a "caldarella" with a "mesata" of oil and made a lamp in honor of the Madonna. Today, pilgrims who visit the sanctuary approach the statue of the farmer, draw blessed oil, and devoutly make the sign of the cross on their foreheads in the name of the "Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit."
The new sanctuary, which replaced the original structure, was designed by the architect Luigi Vagnetti from Rome between 1954 and 1965. In the center, at the top, suspended above the seats, there is an immense bronze crown, ten meters in diameter and weighing forty quintals. On the main altar, the statue of the Black Madonna stands, holding the baby Jesus, dressed in a silk garment of white and gold.
Every year, on the feast day, the last Saturday of April, a new dress is donated to the statue of the Madonna. According to tradition, young women who cannot conceive have the task of dressing the statue of the Madonna Incoronata to prepare her for the procession.
