Swabian Angevin Aragonese Castle

Photo Gallery

Informations

The Castle of Manfredonia, known as the Swabian Angevin Aragonese Castle, was built in the 13th century.

Today it houses the National Archaeological Museum, which houses numerous archaeological finds.

Inside the Swabian Castle of Manfredonia, which was built in the 13th century at the behest of Manfred of Hohenstaufen, son of Emperor Frederick II, the National Archaeological Museum is housed. It preserves objects of great historical and archaeological importance from the Capitanata region and the Gargano area, including the famous Daunian steles.

During the Angevin era, the castle walls acquired an organic structure and a much more complex layout, characterized by a high quadrangular curtain wall. Subsequently, the Aragonese provided the structure with a second outer wall, connected to the corners by four circular towers. In the 16th century, one of these towers, located to the west, was incorporated into a pentagonal bastion, taking its name from a bas-relief depicting an Annunciation scene, still visible today on the external walls.
