Roseto Valfortore

Roseto Valfortore is a charming village located in the province of Foggia, in the Puglia region of Italy. The town, which is part of the "Most Beautiful Villages of Italy" club, is set in a picturesque landscape among the hills of the Southern Dauni Mountains, at about 650 meters above sea level.

The origins of Roseto Valfortore date back to Roman times, but the village experienced significant growth during the Middle Ages. The name "Roseto" likely derives from the presence of wild roses in the area, while "Valfortore" refers to the Fortore River that flows nearby.

Roseto Valfortore is an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic and immersive experience in Puglian tradition and nature. With its historical heritage, cultural traditions, and beautiful landscape, this enchanting village offers a journey through time and into the spirit of the most genuine Puglia.

Roseto Valfortore is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. This small medieval gem is distinguished by its cobblestone streets, stone houses, and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding hills. Among the main points of interest are the Castle, ancient churches such as the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and the Angelic Fountain, symbolizing the area's abundant water supply. Roseto Valfortore is a place where time seems to stand still, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

Testimonies of Feudalism

At the entrance of the "Inn of Tullio and Manlia," what catches the eye are the two high-reliefs embedded in the walls, a testament to the precise craftsmanship and skill of the stonemasons of Roseto. Tradition associates them with the names of Tullio and Manlia, assuming they were a noble couple from Roseto.

Tullio and Manlia, depicted on sepulchral slabs probably dating back to the 1600s, were originally placed inside the mother church in the Chapel of the Annunciation, owned by the De Damiano family. Both slabs were moved from inside the church around 1740 when the De Damiano family, having fallen into poverty, abandoned the Annunciation altar, while the chapel passed to the Della Piccola family from Troia. Poor Tullio and Manlia were relocated under the emerging sacristy, battered by rains and harsh northern winds.

For many years, they were marginalized and represented the enigma of enigmas for the people of Roseto. Thanks to RE.TRA.OS snc by De Simone Antonio and Russo Francesco and Co., who decided to open the "Inn of Tullio and Manlia" in the underground premises of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in the heart of the historic center of Roseto Valfortore, the artwork has been given its due prominence.

In the same inn, the environments have been enhanced by analytically restoring the original structures, giving the impression of traveling back in time and savoring past lifestyles in which Tullio and Manlia loved each other.
