Informations
The GIO Festival – Giordano International Opera Festival is born in Foggia as a major new cultural project promoted by the Chamber of Commerce of Foggia together with the Municipality of Foggia, with the support of the Puglia Region. The initiative is designed to transform the artistic legacy of the Foggia-born composer Umberto Giordano into a driving force for territorial enhancement and cultural tourism.
With a program that combines opera, concerts, cultural meetings, exhibitions, masterclasses, and events spread across Daunia and Gargano, the Festival aims to create a contemporary and multi-centered experience capable of engaging not only opera enthusiasts, but also young people, tourists, and local communities.
The GIO Festival was conceived with a broad vision: to use culture as a strategic tool for economic and tourism development, enhancing the territory through an experiential offer capable of connecting music, heritage, landscape, and local identity. A project inspired by the great festivals dedicated to Italian composers such as Verdi, Rossini, and Bellini, while maintaining a strong territorial and participatory dimension.
Among the main events already announced are two major opera productions dedicated to the works of Umberto Giordano:
June 5, 2026 – 9:00 PM | Teatro Umberto Giordano
“Marina”, the first staged performance of the opera, conducted by Matteo Dal Maso and directed by Giandomenico Vaccari.
June 20, 2026 – 9:30 PM | Piazza Cavour
“Andrea Chénier”, in the Teatro alla Scala production signed by Mario Martone, conducted by Maestro Gianna Fratta. An extraordinary open-air performance that will transform the city center into a grand theatre under the stars.
Alongside the operatic dimension, the Festival will also feature collateral events dedicated to the dialogue between music and contemporaneity, including initiatives such as “Giordano in Jazz,” cultural talks, guided tours through Giordano-related locations, widespread performances, entertainment moments, and activities dedicated to schools and local communities.
The artistic direction of the Festival is entrusted to Maestros Gianna Fratta and Dino De Palma, two prominent figures in the Italian musical scene.
The GIO Festival thus presents itself as one of the most ambitious cultural projects in Southern Italy, capable of combining high culture and territorial promotion, restoring centrality to Foggia and the Capitanata area through a contemporary narration of its cultural identity.
