Church of Santa Maria della Rocca

Photo Gallery

Informations

The construction of the church of Santa Maria della Rocca in Casalnuovo Monterotaro began in 1656, but the works only ended in 1732.

It is located on the highest point of the town and dominates the hill below.

It rises on a hill at the edge of the "La Cappella" neighborhood, the name by which the inhabitants of the village usually call the same church.

Today, the building has a linear and simple plastered facade, interrupted by a beautiful stone portal and three circular eyelets. The bell tower on the side is not the original one, which was demolished in 1967. The interior has a single nave with a wooden truss roof and a vaulted apse. Originally, there were Baroque-style stuccos and paintings; it is characterized by the presence of six chapels and as many valuable 18th-century altars made with the "scagliola" technique by Vincenzo Ciola, as well as a precious 1746 organ by Mauro Gallo. The religious building also houses the late 18th-century painting "Santa Barbara and Santa Lucia" by the Spanish artist Diego Pesco and the 1894 statue of the Madonna della Rocca.
