Plot
"Amphitryon," one of Plautus's most famous works, written over 2000 years ago, addresses profound and universal themes such as identity, the loss of the self, and the concept of the double. The story revolves around Jupiter, the supreme god, who decides to disguise himself as Amphitryon while the latter is away from home, with the intent of seducing Amphitryon's wife, Alcmena, and fathering the demigod Hercules.
During a long night of love, Jupiter, in the guise of Amphitryon, recounts events from the real Amphitryon's life to Alcmena, blending the comic with the tragic. This interaction highlights the complex dynamics of identity and social roles, prompting audiences to reflect on their own lives and relationships.
Director Teresa Ludovico aims to update the themes of Plautus, seeking to mirror the anxieties and challenges of the contemporary world, making the play accessible and relevant to modern audiences.
A production that promises to entertain and provoke thought, "Amphitryon" represents an unmissable opportunity to experience a classic of theater with a fresh interpretation. Don’t miss this exciting performance at Teatro Umberto Giordano!
