Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo
Informations
The cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo (Cerignola) is of neo-Gothic style, dating back to 1873 (year of construction) and consecrated in 1934. It is also known with the name of "Duomo Tonti", in honor of the Italian agronomist and philanthropist Paolo Tonti, who donated part of his wealth for the construction of the same.
The Cathedral of Cerignola has a Latin cross plan with three naves, each marked by four spans with cross vaults. The structure is inspired by the Duomo of Florence. The dome is visible from every point of the city even at a distance of several kilometers.
In 1820, due to the insufficiency of the mother church in Cerignola, planning began for a new cathedral. However, the first two projects were scrapped for economic reasons. In 1855, fellow citizen Paolo Tonti donated the proceeds of his possessions to finance the construction. The third project by architect Saponieri was also rejected due to high costs. Finally, in 1870, the engineer Alvino succeeded in obtaining approval for his project, and the cathedral was built with an estimated cost of 127,000 ducats.
