Church of San Basilio Magno
Informations
Probably of early Christian origin , the Church of San Basilio di Troia is a magnificent building with a massive masonry structure, rebuilt remains drawn several times between the Renaissance and the Baroque era.
Mentioned for the first time by sources in 1081, the church preserves architectural and decorative elements dating back to the second century after Christ. In the facade, we find the original portal, as well as the mullioned window and two friezes, perhaps from Roman times. On the left side of the church, there are two richly decorated doors, one of which is surmounted by a Roman architrave.
Inside, a Latin cross, eight columns built with fragments of marble and stone blocks support hewn capitals. The vault was rebuilt in the sixteenth century, like the central dome, while the barrel cover of the right arm of the transept and the cross cover of the sacristy, with squat support columns are original.
To refine the interior, there are a seventeenth-century baptismal font, a sixth-century fresco depicting the Baptism of Christ, and an eighteenth-century canvas of the Madonna with the Child and Saints.
