Sanctuary of San Matteo Apostolo
Informations
The sanctuary of San Matteo Apostolo is located in San Marco in Lamis, and was founded by the Benedictines between the 9th and 10th centuries.
In the past it was known as the "convent of San Giovanni in Lamis".
Since 1975 the sanctuary of San Matteo Apostolo has undergone restoration works.
The church is a Sanctuary with a single aisle that houses a main altar from the 18th century, created by Neapolitan masters. The choir is a work of carvers from the 17th century, possibly Franciscan friars from the Sanctuary of San Matteo. Worth visiting are the sacristy with furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries, the confession chapel, and the choir area.
Additionally, the Sanctuary includes an artistic nativity scene, conceived by a young Australian artist of Sammarchesi origins, Matteo La Sala. He has made the Baby Jesus the significant center of life, surrounded by angels, shepherds, magi, and animals in the Holy Grotto, while the landscape peeks through the openings.
