Paglicci Cave
Informations
The Paglicci cave is located in the homonymous locality of Rignano Garganico.
Rich in graffiti and paintings, the Paglicci cave dates back to the Paleolithic period.
The Paleolithic deposit is characterized by graffiti, wall paintings, and handprints. Over 45,000 artifacts have been discovered, mainly preserved in the archives of the Archaeological Superintendence of Taranto and the museum in Rignano Garganico. Similar to Grotta Romanelli in terms of paintings and graffiti, this site is one of the most significant for archaeology in Italy.
Inside the cave, three burials and numerous individual human remains dating back to the Gravettian and Epigravettian periods have been found. It is commonly believed that the Paglicci remains belong to the Cro-Magnon man. In September 2020, the discovery of the oldest dog lived in Italy was announced, dating back to a period between 14,000 and 20,000 years ago.
