Church of Santa Maria Assunta - Volturino

The church of Santa Maria Assunta of Volturino, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, is a Romanesque-style building with a very high bell tower. Outside the church of Santa Maria Assunta in a niche located on the facade of the minor entrance we find the Madonna dell'Arco with the Child at her breast, a sculpture of 1590, supported by an artistic architrave bearing a valuable bas-relief sculpture of the twelve Apostles. The sculptures of the Madonna dell’Arco, the Madonna delle Grazie and the twelve Apostles were declared works of art and national heritage in 1935 by the Superintendency of Monuments and Fine Arts.

On the side of the entrance to the church of Santa Maria Assunta of Volturino we find the bell tower where the cross and the weather vane are located on the pinnacle. The belfry can be reached via an internal staircase. Inside we find four openings with sacred bronzes. In the sound chamber there are three bells: the big bell of the year 1886 and two smaller ones dating back to 1793 and 1886. Finally, we also find the two bells of the public clock dating back to 1910.

Inside the church, in the center of the ceiling, there is the wonderful painting on canvas of the Assumption in Heaven. Along the walls it is possible to admire other paintings dating back to the 16th century. On the sides of the church there are the altars of the Assunta in Cornu and of the Serritella and the superb marble Pergamum, built as a devotion to Mr. Giovanni D'Andola in 1922. In the presbytery it is possible to admire the majestic Crucifix which extends in all its width.
