Church of Santa Maria dei Teutoni
Informations
On the road to Monteleone di Puglia there is the ancient church of Santa Maria dei Teutoni, also known as the church of Santa Maria Maggiore of Accadia, born as a pagan temple along the route of what was once the Via Herculea.
According to legend, the wife of the Roman emperor Alexander Severus is buried here, in fact there are three busts: the first of Alexander Severus, the second of his mother Namea and the third of his wife Sallustia.
According to tradition, Pope Callixtus II died here in 1124 while returning from a Council held in Troia.
