Gambacorta Castle
Informations
The Gambacorta castle is located in Celenza Valfortore and is located on the top of the hill with two towers and three beautiful loggias.
From the Aragonese period, its construction was begun in 1467 by Giovanni Gambacorta and completed in 1519 by his son Carlo and transformed in 1575 by his nephew Carlo Gambacorta di Gianpaolo into a noble residence. Around 1600, thanks to Andrea Gambacorta, an expert in architecture, painting and sculpture, the walls of the hanging garden were rebuilt and the apartments of the baronial palace were completed, enriching them with ornamental paintings.
The castle of Celenza Valfortore currently still preserves a large part of the small feudal historic center including some portals dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Then there is a cylindrical tower with an escarpment base and a crenelated cornice. The second tower was set on fire in 1799 and, under it, there was the prison of the feudal era. There were initially five ancient towers, as can be seen from the Celenza Valfortore coat of arms. The last baron who owned it was Orazio Giliberti who in 1808 sold it to the notary Michele Iamele for 3600 ducats.
