Lake of Occhito
Informations
The Lake of Occhito is the largest artificial lake in Italy and the second in Europe, created with a dam on the Fortore. It marks the natural border between Puglia and Molise for about 10 km and has a length of about 12 km.
The artificial reservoir of Occhito is now completely naturalized. It represents a biotope of avi-faunal interest. It is considered a wetland of great environmental importance and is protected by the Ramsar Treaty. It is not uncommon to see migratory and sedentary aquatic birds taking refuge among the aquatic vegetation in the Lake of Occhito (including coots, herons, moorhens and mallards). But also numerous freshwater fish (carp, trout, tench, large perch, bleak...).
Occhito is also important for the otter, whose presence is ascertained thanks to numerous traces. The place is characterized by arboreal vegetation on the banks on which oaks, ornellos, ash trees, maples, dogwoods, holm oaks, robinia, aleppo pine and maritime pine are discovered.
