Necropolis of Mount Saraceno
Informations
The Necropolis of Mount Saraceno is a magical place, which still excites those who decide to visit the Gargano today.
In the 9th century BC here settled a population devoted to agriculture, hunting and fishing: the Dauni. An important Dauna necropolis was found on Mount Saraceno, with its tombs and hundreds of funerary steles on a slope overlooking the sea.
Most of the tombs rise a short distance from where the steles were recovered; these have a rectangular or trapezoidal plan and are dug out of the calcareous rock generally in the shape of a female bag or uterus. The very rich grave goods of Dauni vases, Illyrian fibulae, objects in amber, ivory or gold that the Dauni traded with the Balkans.
The necropolis of Monte Saraceno is located southeast of Mattinata, at an altitude of 260 meters. The site holds traces of ancient settlements, and in the necropolis, bronze objects, vases, and sculptures have been found. The necropolis takes its name from the Saracens, and over the centuries, various groups of Saracens settled in this area until they were definitively expelled by the Normans in 1032. During their stay, the Saracens built a watchtower, which later was transformed into a signaling station, but both were destroyed by earthquakes in 1893. The Monte Saraceno Lighthouse was subsequently erected on one side of the mountain.
