Pizzomunno
Informations
Pizzomunno is a very famous monolith located in Vieste, on the spiaggia del Castello.
This fantastic monolith, symbol of the Gargano all over the world, hides a wonderful legend: "Pizzomunno was a young and beautiful fisherman who lived in Vieste when it was still a small village of huts; in the same place and in the same period lived a beautiful girl from name Cristalda. The two young people met and fell in love, swearing eternal fidelity. Pizzomunno, with his boat, went out fishing in the sea every night, and punctually the sirens, bewitched by its beauty, emerged from the waves and sang in his honor, offering him to become immortal if he joined them. Pizzomunno, however, on the strength of his promise to Cristalda, never yielded to these offers. One evening the sirens, angry at the fisherman's constant refusals and seized by jealousy, emerged from the sea depths and kidnapped Cristalda, chaining her and dragging her to the bottom of the sea; Pizzomunno chased his beloved's voice in vain, until, destroyed by anger and pain, petrified, turning into the white rock. "
This legend was also told by the singer-songwriter Max Gazzè, in a song presented in 2018 at the Sanremo festival, entitled "The legend of Cristalda and Pizzomunno".
