Sanctuary of San Pio da Pietrelcina
Informations
The church of San Pio da Pietrelcina is located in San Giovanni Rotondo, and is dedicated to Padre Pio.
The sanctuary of San Pio da Pietrelcina was designed by the famous architect Renzo Piano, and built between 1994 and 2004.
The Church of San Giovanni Rotondo is located on the mountain and is close to the sanctuary and convent where the friar lived, and where his remains were kept before being transferred to the new church dedicated to him. Its shape is inspired by the nautilus, with the plan resembling the Archimedean spiral, and the altar is placed at the center of the liturgical hall.
Next to the church, a large square has been built, connected through a huge glass window and an access avenue. The architectural innovation of this project is the use of Apricena stone as a sturdy and decorative structure. This choice involved tests and experiments to ensure its seismic resistance in a high-risk seismic area. Thanks to significant technological experiments, the structure can now withstand forces up to 6 times greater than those of earthquakes recorded in the area, despite the material's low ductility.
