Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Serritella
Informations
The sanctuary of Santa Maria di Serritella of Volturino is called "extra moenia church" or "rural chapel", as indicated in the documents of the Badiale Church. There is no memory of its foundation, certainly very old. In ancient times it was a convent of the Order of Preachers.
The church of Santa Maria di Serritella was occupied until 1653, for over a century, by the friars of the Order of San Domenico, for the preservation of the cult of the Madonna della Serritella. The friars restored the church and the ancient monastery. In 1711 the Apostolic Visitor, finding it in poor condition, ordered the demolition of the eastern nave and transformed the remaining one. He closed the main door of the entrance located to the north, building a niche for the statue of the Virgin, opening a new entrance to the south.
In 1718, Cardinal Orsini had the altar of the Church of San Domenico of Volturino placed in the eastern part and the following year he opened it for worship. Every year, on the first Sunday of May, the inhabitants of Volturino celebrate the Madonna della Serritella by transporting the Virgin from the rural chapel to the town.
