Urban Hypogea - Foggia
Informations
The Urban Hypogea are underground environments located in the subsoil of the historic center of Foggia. The history of these cavities is intertwined with that of Frederick II's Palatium, in fact the royal palace is located in that area (under Piazza Purgatorio).
Despite the earthquake of 1731 and the bombings that hit the city during the Second World War, Foggia boasts an important historic center enriched by important palaces, churches and monuments from the Frederick era such as the 12th century cathedral and the arch of Frederick II leaning against the civic Museum. Developed throughout the nineteenth century and the Fascist period, the city outside the ancient center is characterized by wide tree-lined avenues and squares, as well as by monuments and buildings of historical and architectural value.
Several studies have brought to light some parts of hypogea, which connect a large part of the ancient city center. The most important urban hypogeum is certainly the one in via San Domenico, near the Church of Purgatory.
